Richard has approached art as a hobby, inspired by many people, including an aunt who was a water colorist, a father who had many artistic hobbies, and a great grandfather who was a furniture maker. He has also been inspired by many artists, teachers and fellow art students. His works in wood include some furniture, turned bowls, carved platters, and items ornamented using specialty lathe called a Rose Engine lathe. He also draws and paints with charcoal, pastels, and oil paints, and has dabbled with various styles of printing, including monotypes, etching, and dry point.
